Who Is This?

They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!" Mark 4: 41

“Mama, you should’ve seen this guy! He was super strong! He could bend a horseshoe into a heart!” My ten year-old and my six-year old began to tell me as they walked in the door one day after school. Contrary to their usual dragging backpacks and feet as they come in the door, today my sons walked in swinging their bags and talking above each other trying to compete for who would be able to tell me the story about today’s impressive guest at school.

“He was so strong, Mama, he could rip a phonebook!” They kept telling me the amazing feats of such unusual visitor. “Who is this man?” I asked them. “The World’s Strongest Red-Neck!” They replied in unison. I did all I could to restrain my laugh. I didn’t want my reaction to be disrespectful to them for that guy had really made a huge impression in my boys. But I was chuckling inside.

The way my boys talked about the World’s Strongest Red-Neck showed a mix of respect combined with a healthy dose of fear and tons of admiration. They saw what this man could do and they were in awe.

Later I thought about this and on how often my cynicism wears out any sense of awe in me. “Wouldn’t it be nice to be awestruck once in a while?” I sighed.

Wait? What am I saying? Once again the Holy Spirit shakes me a bit. Don’t I realize that I get to re-discover the most amazing figure in the history of the world every single time I do my work? I have the privilege of digging in the Word for inspiration and finding out more and more each day about “who this man, Jesus, is.” I get to experience how He loves me to His death. I get to hear how He chose me before the beginning of time. I get to dive into His teaching and celebrate what He has done in my life and all around me each day I sit in front of my computer and write a post! How could I not be in awe!

I praise you, Dear Lord this day and every day for you have blessed me with the gift of an occupation that revolves around You. Let me never forget or take it for granted. May my eyes be always fixed on You, and may my heart always have room for awe.
